Whiplash is brought on by a forward/backward jerk of the neck.  A side-to-side jerk of the neck could be the case if you were hit on the side of your vehicle during the accident.  This over extension of the muscles causes micro-tears in the scalene and/or splenius capitus muscles.  These micro-tears cause edema (swelling) along with pain.  If left untreated, whiplash can cause debilitating headaches and muscle scarring, along with other chronic conditions.
